Stephen Joseph Harper, PC, MP is the 22nd and current Prime Minister of Canada, and leader of the Conservative Party. Harper became Prime Minister after his party won a minority government in the January 2006 federal election. He is the first Prime Minister from the newly reconstituted Conservative Party, following a merger of the Progressive Conservative and Canadian Alliance parties. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has worked through the right-leaning parties in Canada, and as Leader of the Canadian Alliance Party oversaw its merger with the Progressive Conservatives to form the new Conservative Party of Canada in 2003.

Michael Ignatieff MP
Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada

Michael Grant Ignatieff MP is the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and Leader of the Official Opposition in Canada. Widely known for his work as an historian and author, Ignatieff held senior academic posts at the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, Harvard University and the University of Toronto before entering politics in 2006. An intellectual and academic, Michael Ignatieff had spent only a few years of his adult life in Canada before returning in 2005. He became a member of parliament in the 2006 general election.

Gilles Duceppe, MP
Leader of the Bloc Québécois

Gilles Duceppe, MP is a Quebec nationalist and social democratic politician in Canada. He is a Member of Parliament in the Canadian House of Commons and the leader of the sovereigntist Bloc Québécois. He is the son of a well-known Quebec actor, Jean Duceppe. He was Leader of the Official Opposition in the Parliament of Canada from March 17, 1997 to June 1, 1997. Gilles Duceppe became the Bloc Québécois Party's first federal member of parliament in 1990, and in 1997 he became the Bloc party leader. A Quebec separatist in Ottawa, Gilles Duceppe will always be in opposition and leads a party which only runs candidates in the province of Quebec.

The Honourable Doctor - John Gilbert Layton
Leader of the New Democratic Party

Jack Layton, PC, MP is a Canadian social democratic politician and since 2003 has been leader of Canada's New Democratic Party. He is a former member of the Toronto City Council and acting deputy mayor of Toronto, Ontario. On June 28, 2004, he was elected Member of Parliament for the constituency of Toronto—Danforth. NDP leader Jack Layton was a left-wing Toronto city councillor for 17 years. Jack Layton spent a year as head of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and is familiar with problems facing cities across Canada. Jack Layton is fluently bilingual, glib, sometimes flashy, and always media-friendly.

Elizabeth May - Leader of the Green Party of Canada

Elizabeth May, OC is a Canadian environmentalist, writer, activist lawyer, and the current leader of the Green Party of Canada. She was also the executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada from 1989 to 2006. An environmental activist since her teens, Elizabeth May left her position as Executive Director of the Sierra Club of Canada to run successfully for leader of the Green Party of Canada in 2006. Elizabeth May, who is a lawyer and author, is media savvy and knows how to get attention for her causes.
